ASUU Warns of New Strike Over Unmet 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has warned of a fresh round of industrial action over what it called the "haphazard implementation" of the 2025 agreement signed with the Federal Government.

ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, raised the alarm on Friday while briefing journalists at the union’s secretariat in Jos.

In a statement titled _“Nigerian Universities and Nigeria Today: Our Worries, Our Propositions,”_ Prof. Piwuna said the government is yet to fully implement the 2025 agreement. He also cited the continued withholding of salaries and entitlements owed to lecturers from the 2022 strike.

According to him, the delays are threatening industrial peace and disrupting academic activities across universities.

The ASUU President disclosed that the union’s National Executive Council has authorized chapters in federal and state universities to begin varying levels of industrial action once certain conditions are met.

Beyond education, ASUU also expressed concern over rising insecurity, economic hardship, and the tense political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The union urged the Federal Government to urgently review its economic and social policies, prioritize citizens’ welfare, and resolve all outstanding issues in the university system.
